Every cap, a single penny.

I'm seventy-two and closing my workshop for good. I'd sooner a good man wore the caps I've got left than watch them go in a skip. So every cap's a penny — you only cover the postage, and one parcel carries the lot, so the more you take, the less each costs to reach you. Build your crate below.

★★★★★Five stars from men who finally found a cap that sits right
Edmund “Ted” Fell, at his bench in the Yorkshire Dales

“A wholesaler offered me pennies on the pound for what's left. I said no. I'd sooner these caps sat on real heads than in a skip behind the workshop.”

My name is Edmund Fell — Ted, to the men in the village. For fifty years I've cut caps by hand at one bench in the Yorkshire Dales: the crown shaped to follow a man's head, the peak softened so it frames his face, the band given a hair of stretch so it sits right and stays put. Yorkshire wool, waxed cotton, soft-washed denim — cloth built to age with a man, not fall apart after a season.

But come the end of this season I'm shutting the door for good. My hands have earned their rest, and there's no one behind me. So when I lock up, that's the end of the whole line — no apprentice, no next season, no caps churned out somewhere far away with my name on a label I never touched.

That's left me a workshop full of the last caps I'll ever make. I couldn't bear to see them binned. So build yourself a crate — one for the cold, one for the sun, one to keep in the car, one for your lad. Every cap's a penny; you only cover the postage. Let them be worn.

Your crate, in three steps

1

Choose your crate

Two, three or four caps travel home in your crate. Most men take three. Every cap a penny, whichever you pick.

2

Fill it from the bench

Start with Ted's Picks, or browse the whole bench by type. Different cloth sits different — take a spread and land the one that suits your head.

3

Cover the one postage

They all ride in a single parcel, so each extra cap costs less to send than the last. One payment. No club. No surprises at checkout.

Forty years I've said caps aren't for me. First one that didn't perch up on top like a tea cosy. I look like me — just tidier.

Thought there'd be a catch. Paid the postage, the cap turned up, no bill, no nonsense. Ordered two more the same week.

Ted answered my email himself. Turns out there's a real man behind it. That doesn't happen anymore.

The wife says it's the best I've looked in years. Sits right the moment it goes on — no fiddling, no pushing it back.

The wool one kept my head warm through a cold snap down here. Proper cloth, cut proper. Worth far more than the postage.

Bought one for me and one for my son. He wears his the way he watched me wear mine. Worth a penny and then some.
